Safari – South Africa - General Information
What is a Safari?
A Safari is a wildlife expedition, in the past the word Safari (Safari is actually a Swahili word meaning “long journey” which was derived from the Arabic word safara which means “travel”) referred to hunting expeditions but fortunately early in the 20th century Safaris were redefined and became more of a photo-safari experience where people can view wildlife in its natural environment.
With conservation laws protecting wildlife it has become easier for animal lovers to enjoy safaris without the risk of running into hunting expeditions, which are in steady decline. More often than not wildlife is viewed from land vehicles (game vehicles) as it is too dangerous to venture through the natural habitats of wild animals on foot. Game drives are often well thought out and experienced rangers can take the necessary detours in a safe and non-destructive manner thus making your safari experience more exciting and fulfilling.
Many game reserves offer accommodation in or close to the wildlife, which gives visitors the chance to enjoy their safari experience even when not on game drives. Lalibela for example has lodges inside the wildlife area and because there are no public roads running through it the predators are free roaming thus keeping the perfect balance in the surrounding ecosystem. This often provides guests with unique sightings and the knowledge that they are in an authentic wildlife environment.
